Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is expected to see a reduction of almost $8 million in operational funding over the next three years through the Financial Assistance Grant program.
Following a decision made late last year, TRC Mayor Paul Antonio said this worked out to a reduction of 23% each year for the next three financial years.
"Last week we received a payment from the program and while we welcome the funding, the reality is, we continue to receive less funding to look after our Region, while our asset base continues to expand," Mayor Antonio said.
"Council is responsible for maintaining $5.4 billion of community infrastructure, including approximately $2.8 billion of road and bridge network.
"The Financial Assistance Grant contributes to this community infrastructure upkeep and a reduction in this program directly impacts our ability to maintain these assets to required standards.
"This follows an alarming trend from both the State and Federal Government, in reductions to the level of funding we receive and unfortunately, those who suffer the most are the residents of the Toowoomba Region.
"We urgently need to address this matter and as such, I've sent letters to the relevant State and Federal Government Members. I will also be speaking with our local Federal Member, seeking his support."
In addition to the reduction of this program, TRC Finance and Business Strategy Committee Chair Councillor Geoff McDonald said Council would also see a decrease of approximately $317,500 each year through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme.
"When you take into account both of these funding streams for the next three years, that is more than $8 million that we will need to find elsewhere for our community," Cr McDonald said.
"If we aren't able to secure the necessary funding through the State and Federal Governments, it leaves us in the unenviable position of having to consider either an increase in rates or a reduction in service levels, if not both.
"None of these scenarios result in a good outcome for our community so we'll be doing everything within our power to resolve this matter."
