Mildura Rural City Council slashed greenhouse gas emissions by 329 tonnes in 2025-26 while reducing water use, cutting paper consumption and diverting more than 16,000 tonnes of waste from landfill through recycling and organics programs.

The achievements are highlighted in Council's 2025-26 Environmental Sustainability Report, which showcases continued progress across renewable energy, waste reduction, biodiversity, water conservation and community education initiatives.

Council also expanded its renewable energy capacity to 1,444kW of installed solar panels and 273kWh of battery storage across Council-owned facilities, planted 1,519 trees in urban areas and engaged 2,238 residents, students and community members in environmental education programs.

Mildura Mayor Ali Cupper said the report showed that meaningful outcomes could be achieved through consistent action and buy in from the community.

"Community involvement is central to our success," Cr Cupper said. "Whether it's participating in Clean Up Australia Day, National Tree Day, visiting the Mildura Eco Village or making better choices at home, our community continues to show a strong commitment to caring for our environment.

"Our focus is on creating a healthier and more sustainable place for future generations and it's work that our Council and community should be proud of."

Water remains one of the Mallee's most valuable resources, and Council continues to improve water efficiency through sustainable management practices across irrigation, stormwater, buildings, facilities and aquatic centres.

These efforts delivered a five per cent reduction in water consumption during 2025-26, with total usage falling to 1,591 megalitres compared to the previous year.

Council also reduced its paper use by 20 per cent.

Council's waste and resource recovery programs delivered strong results, diverting and recycling more than 12,500 tonnes of food and garden organics, along with thousands of tonnes of recycling and glass waste.
