East Gippsland Shire Council is reminding residents that support is available for community members experiencing financial difficulties and struggling to pay their rates.
Council's Hardship Policy provides a compassionate and accessible framework to assist ratepayers who are finding it difficult to manage rates and charges during challenging economic times.
Mayor Jodie Ashworth encouraged residents to contact council early if they are experiencing difficulties.
"The most important step is to reach out to us as soon as possible, so we can understand your situation and offer support," Cr Ashworth said.
"We provide a collaborative, solution-focused environment that is free from judgment.
"The Hardship Policy ensures that all ratepayers, regardless of their circumstances, receive the support they need. We want everyone to know that if they're facing challenges, we're here to help in any way we can."
The Hardship Policy offers a range of support options, including:
- Flexible payment plans tailored to individual needs, allowing smaller payments over a longer period without interest
- Options to defer rates and charges until a more manageable time
- Possible waivers of rates and charges for those experiencing significant hardship
- A simple and straightforward application process
"We understand that seeking help can be difficult, but we've made every effort to simplify the process for our community," Cr Ashworth said.
Council's Rates team will visit several towns in mid-March, providing opportunities for face-to-face support in Omeo, Cann River, Mallacoota, Orbost and Lakes Entrance.
"We are committed to supporting ratepayers who are experiencing payment difficulties," Cr Ashworth said.
"By working together, we can find solutions that assist our community."
