Council teams assessing rain damage

Byron Shire Council staff are out and about across the Shire, assessing damage from the rain.

There is water over some roads and causeways and people are asked to either delay their trip until the water subsides or use an alternative route if possible.

Phil Holloway, Director Infrastructure Services, said there will more damage to the road network.

"We have got a lot of work done in the last couple of months so it is disappointing that there will be some more damage but at this stage we're not expecting it to be major," Mr Holloway said.

"We seemed to have missed a lot of the heavy rain that fell on the Gold Coast and parts of the Tweed," he said.

People who see something on our roads, bridges and causeways that needs urgent attention should call our Customer Service staff on 02 6626 7000.

For matters that aren't urgent people should use the Report It tab on Council's website.

The Bureau of Meteorology, this morning, cancelled a severe weather warning for the Northern Rivers which includes Byron Shire.

Belongil Creek and Tallow Creek are both open to the ocean.
