Council Teams Up With Burwood Police For Youth Mental Health

The City of Canada Bay was proud to support the Hoops for Hope youth event hosted by Burwood Police Area Command to celebrate Mental Health Month.

Concord Oval Recreation Centre was alive with energy and purpose on Monday, 29 September as the Hoops for Hope event hit the sports courts. Over 100 young people aged 13-18 turned out for the free 3-on-3 basketball tournament dedicated to raising awareness and support for youth mental health.

A range of support service providers were invited to the event, including Youth Off The Streets, Gamble Aware, CABL, Headspace and RUOK?, offering teenagers an opportunity to easily access resources and information in a safe space.

"Council was delighted to assist with bringing the Hoops for Hope event to life, connecting young people with support services and providing a state-of-the-art space to host the tournament," said City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna. "The event reached full capacity with 26 teams registering, which demonstrates how strong the appetite is for positive, community-focused events like this. More than anything, Hoops for Hope is about creating a support network and letting young people know they're not alone."

Senior Constable Jordan of Burwood Police Area Command agreed that it was fantastic to host Hoops 4 Hope in Concord, bringing together so many young people from around the area. "The free tournament, with awesome prizes and a great atmosphere, provided a powerful opportunity for Burwood and Inner West Police Area Commands to connect with youth in a positive way through sport and recreation. Events like this not only build trust but also promote mental health and community wellbeing," he said.

Thanks to all who played, supported and showed up to make Hoops for Hope a powerful and inspiring community event that put a spotlight on the importance of youth mental wellbeing.
