Council to remember Anzacs

Townsville City Council is working with the Townsville and Thuringowa RSL Sub-Branches to host two Anzac Day commemorations on Tuesday 25 April.

Townsville City will host a Dawn Service from 5:20 am at Anzac Memorial Park, followed by a parade along The Strand from Strand Park at 9am.

Thuringowa will host a Dawn Service from 5:40 am at the Thuringowa Cenotaph, followed by a parade along Ross River Road from Weir School at 9am, as well as a mid-morning service at the Thuringowa Cenotaph at 9.30am.

The Townsville City Dawn Service and the Townsville City Parade are family-friendly events and will be also available to watch live online for members of the community who may not be able to attend in person.

Mayor Jenny Hill said Anzac Day was especially poignant for the people of Townsville due to the city's proud links to the defence forces.

"As Australia's largest garrison city, home to Lavarack Barracks and RAAF Base Townsville, Anzac Day takes on an extra special meaning for Townsville," Cr Hill said.

"Over the years, thousands of Australian servicemen and women have deployed to conflicts and on peacekeeping missions from Townsville.

"Tragically, many did not return, leaving a hole in their family, circle of friends and our community. Some of those who were fortunate to return from their deployment made their home here and have helped make our community what it is today."

Council has worked closely with the Townsville RSL Sub-Branch and the Thuringowa RSL Sub-Branch to deliver this year's Anzac Day commemorations, paying respect to those who have lost their lives in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Big screens onsite will be set up to clearly view the ceremony from more areas of the event sites.

These commemorations are part of Council's ongoing commitment to showcase and protect local heritage values, including built, defence, Indigenous and local history.

Council is also committed to maintaining inclusive connected neighbourhoods and helping build a sense of belonging for people in the Townsville community.
