Council has affirmed its commitment to gender and sexuality diversity by unanimously supporting a Notice of Motion that positions Stonnington as a local government free from discrimination based on sexuality, sex or gender.
In a joint submission to the 15 February Council meeting, Councillors Mike Scott, Polly Morgan and Matthew Koce, proposed a series of actions that demonstrate a genuine commitment to inclusiveness and support for our diverse community.
Under the Motion the city will:
- Establish a Gender and Sexuality Diverse Advisory Committee
- Develop a Gender and Sexuality Diverse Action Plan
- Fly the appropriate flag from Council buildings on Gender and Sexuality Diverse awareness days
- March in the Pride March under a Council banner
- Participate in Midsumma and local Pride events
Councillors have previously shown their support for gender and sexuality diversity, with the majority signing the Victorian Pride Lobby’s Rainbow Pledge.
Stonnington has one of the largest gender and sexuality diverse communities in Victoria, and the Rainbow Pledge supports Council to show leadership and create an environment where the community are supported and encouraged to thrive.
The Stonnington community has a proud history of supporting gender and sexuality diversity, most notably during the Marriage Equality national vote, when Stonnington achieved one of the highest recorded ‘Yes’ votes in the country.
Unanimously supported, the motion combines Council’s existing list of inclusive events and initiatives with a new set of actions, into an holistic all-of-council and community approach.
