Swan Hill Rural City Council has endorsed its key advocacy priorities ahead of the upcoming Victorian State Election, outlining a clear list of critical projects and investments needed to support the region's future growth, safety and liveability.
Council Mayor, Cr Stuart King said Council would take a united and determined message to all candidates and parties.
"These priorities reflect what our community has been telling us for years - we need infrastructure that keeps people safe, supports our economy and allows our region to grow.
"We will be strongly advocating to ensure our municipality receives its fair share," Cr King said.
Council's number one advocacy priority is securing a commitment to construct a new Swan Hill bridge, including the additional $100 million required from the Victorian Government to commence construction.
"A new bridge isn't just a local project - it's critical infrastructure for freight, agriculture, tourism and cross-border travel.
"We'll be working alongside neighbouring councils, industry and regional stakeholders to present a united case, and we'll be inviting Ministers and candidates to visit the site so they can see firsthand the urgency and readiness of this project. - let's build this bridge, so we can all get over it," Cr King said.
Cr King said Council would also be advocating for safety upgrades to key State-managed roads, including traffic lights at Gray and Campbell Streets and a roundabout at Murlong and McCallum Streets in Swan Hill.
"These are well-known danger points and improvements will significantly enhance road safety while improving freight efficiency," he said.
Council is seeking State Government support to tackle housing shortages impacting local industries and essential services, including funding for key worker accommodation and infrastructure in smaller towns.
"Housing shortages are impacting businesses, agriculture and healthcare across our region. We've already proven we can deliver housing locally - now we need the support to scale it up and ensure workers have a place to live," he added.
Cr King stated they would also be advocating for funding to deliver shovel-ready masterplans across the municipality, including a new sporting hub, youth and family facilities, and riverfront and recreation reserve upgrades.
"These projects improve health and wellbeing, strengthen community connection and help attract and retain people in our region," Cr King said.
Finally, Council will also continue supporting Swan Hill District Health in securing funding to complete the remaining stages of the hospital redevelopment, which services approximately 35,000 people across the cross-border catchment.
"Access to quality healthcare is essential for regional communities, and completing the hospital upgrade is vital for our future," Cr King said.
Cr King emphasised that while Council had identified its primary advocacy priorities, it would continue to champion additional opportunities that benefit the municipality.
"These priorities are about jobs, safety, health and the long-term future of our community and while these are our key focuses, we will absolutely continue advocating for other important opportunities as they arise," he concluded.
