Council welcomes funding for sport and recreation facilities in Boroondara

The City of Boroondara welcomes the recent Federal Government announcement of $8 million towards the Swinburne Senior Secondary College Stadium and Sportsground Redevelopment in Hawthorn.

The existing stadium is in need of repair and the sportsground is currently not fit for competition. The project will deliver two indoor courts, change rooms, canteen/teaching kitchen for students, a sports pavilion, a redeveloped oval and a new public space between Fritsch Holzer Park and Camberwell Road.

Mayor of Boroondara, Cr Jane Addis, said the project would provide the community with more opportunities for physical and social activities.

"There is extensive demand for indoor and outdoor facilities from many sports. As an inner city council, Boroondara has limited access to additional space to keep pace with the demand. This project significantly improves the area's ability to cater for a number of sporting activities," Cr Addis said.

Under the proposal, Swinburne Senior Secondary College would have access to the stadium during school hours and the community would be able to use the facilities outside of school hours. The project is contingent on funding from the Victorian Government.

"Having accessible and high quality public space and facilities is important to our community. It's a key strategy in the Boroondara Community Plan and our Sport and Recreation Strategy. We look forward to further discussions with the school and the Victorian Government to see how we can make this proposal a reality," Cr Addis said.
