The City of Casey has endorsed a plan that supports Council to work towards better use of its important land assets, including investigating future options for the former civic centre site in Narre Warren.
At the Council Meeting on Tuesday 2 July 2019, Council endorsed the Strategic Utilisation of Council Land Work Plan which outlines steps to support Council to realise the community value of surplus land and ensure Council owned land is used in a way that provides positive liveability outcomes for residents.
The first major initiative under the plan is the continued investigation of potential opportunities for the former civic centre site. Since the development of Bunjil Place, work has been underway to identify future options for this site, taking into account open space requirements, community and civic use of the space that align with urban design guidelines.
City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said the work happening in regard to the use of Council owned land would have great benefits for the community.
"The site of the former civic centre is a wonderful community asset that holds so many possibilities," Cr Stapledon said.
"Council is working to ensure that the use of this space will provide the best outcomes for the community and create a wonderful new space for now and into the future."
An Oversight Committee has been set up to oversee the Strategic Utilisation of Council Land Work Plan and to assist in providing direction of Council priorities and objectives. It includes the Mayor, two Councillors and Council staff.
This group will focus on the former civic centre site initially and undertake an expression of interest process to facilitate the best outcome for the community.
The next step for the Oversight Committee is to prepare a business case for the former civic centre site to be presented to Council by September 2019.
