The Rockhampton Botanic Gardens have a fresh new look underfoot, with Council's latest pathway upgrades now complete and ready for the community to enjoy.
Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said more than 600 square metres of aging brick pavers have been replaced with concrete pathways over the last month.
"The upgrade focused on improving five key areas around the Japanese Gardens and creating a more connected circuit," Cr Rutherford said.
"Footpaths have been upgraded from the main entry near the Cenotaph, to the Tea House, right thorough to the Tamarind tree boundary."
Cr Rutherford said the latest works mark the fourth year of footpath upgrades for the gardens.
"With this year's works complete, Council has now replaced more than 3,500 square metres of footpaths as part of our ongoing Pathway Paver Replacement Program," Cr Rutherford said.
"Planning is already underway for next year's upgrades, with the next section currently being finalised.
"These upgrades make a real difference for everyone - from families with prams to visitors who use mobility aids - it's about making sure the gardens are welcoming and accessible to all."
Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said another part of the project Council is proud of is its ability to go full circle.
"Another great outcome of the Paver Replacement Program is that we have been able to repurpose the hundreds of old brick pavers," Cr Taylor said.
"The same pavers that once supported foot traffic through the gardens will now help support traffic on our roads by becoming a sub-base layer for future road pavement.
"All of the pavers from the latest upgrade have been packed up, and rather than being sent to landfill, will be crushed into fine particles and eventually become an ingredient for road base.
"It's a practical way to reduce waste and extend the value of our infrastructure."
The latest upgrades come just in time for this year's Radiance lightshow, with the new season premiering Friday, 28 November.
