Counselor Chollet's Meeting with NUG Representatives 9 April

Counselor Derek Chollet met today with NUG representatives Aung Myo Min and Moe Zaw Oo. The Counselor expressed deep sympathy for the victims of the military regime's brutal atrocities across Burma. He pledged the United States' strong support for the people of Burma and discussed ways to step up assistance to the people, promote a return to Burma's path of democratic transition, and advance peaceful resolution to the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crises the military caused by its February 2021 military coup. In addition, the Counselor voiced appreciation for the NUG's robust leadership and its efforts to promote respect for the human rights of all individuals in Burma, regardless of ethnicity or religion. They also discussed Secretary Blinken's recent announcement of the U.S. determination that members of the military committed genocide and crimes against humanity against Rohingya and exchanged views on ways to further promote accountability and justice for the military's atrocities.
