Country women come together in Canberra to inspire women and girls

Themed ‘Inspiring women and girls’ the Country Women’s Association of Australia (CWAA) National Conference will be held at the QT Hotel in Canberra this week. The CWAA advances the rights and equity of women, families and communities in Australia through advocacy and empowerment, especially for those living in rural, regional and remote Australia.

"There are always challenges to be faced in rural and remote areas," National President, Dorothy Coombe said. "But there are so many inspiring ways in which to overcome them."
The Conference program will salute achievements whilst exploring practical strategies and solutions on issues that affect women. Discussions will educate and inspire the leaders of the future.
Delegates will be welcomed to Ngunnawal Country by local Elder Matilda House. Other speakers include Ruth Shanks, World President of the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW); Martin Laverty, CEO of the Royal Flying Doctor Service; Brianna Casey, CEO of Foodbank Australia; Fiona Simson, President of the National Farmers Federation; and newly appointed National Drought Coordinator, Major General Stephen Day.
There will also be sessions on agriculture, communications, health, governance, and finance. The full program can be found on the Conference website at: https://nrha.eventsair.com/QuickEventWebsitePortal/cwaa/nc
CWA members around the country have been working hard to raise money to provide financial assistance to families affected by the current drought. Our Members know only too well the difficulties of trying to run a farm and raise a family during times of drought. The CWA of NSW operates a Disaster Relief Fund to assist people in need - donations can be made via www.cwaofnsw.org.au/donate.
During the week delegates will also be supporting local Canberra-based organisation, ‘Karinya House’ (https://karinyahouse.asn.au/). Karinya House is a community-based organisation that supports vulnerable and at-risk pregnant and early parenting women in Canberra and the surrounding region.
"The CWAA is very pleased to be meeting in the nation’s capital and we look forward to meeting many locals during the week. The Conference is not only for CWA Members and it is not too late to register," Dorothy Coombe said.
