Couple charged over "Back to Work" grants fraud

A 51-year-old man has today appeared before the Brisbane Magistrates Court after being arrested and charged by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Financial and Cyber Crime Group following a complaint of fraud from the Queensland Government regarding the ‘Back to Work’ grants program. A 43-year-old woman has also been noticed to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court at a later date, Queensland Police say.

Detectives will allege the 51-year-old male and 43-year-old female submitted and attempted to submit a number of fraudulent applications to the Queensland Treasury Department to claim the Government’s "Back to Work" grants, totalling just over $1 million dollars over a 12 month period. It will be alleged the couple obtained an actual sum of over $300,000.00.

Detective Superintendent Terry Lawrence said programs of this nature are designed to support Queensland employers and jobseekers and provide a boost to our economy. It is disappointing there are those who we allege have taken advantage of programs such as this for their own gain at the expense of others in our community.

The matters before the court are one allegation of fraud and one of attempted fraud.
