Covid - Infringements continue in Katherine

Northern Territory police have issued a further 10 infringements overnight in Katherine for breaches of the Chief Health Officer's Directions.

None of these people had valid reasons to have left their residences and were mostly not wearing masks.

Superintendent Peter Dash said, "The faster people comply with the CHO Directions the faster we get out of lockdown and back to the freedom of the activities we enjoy in the NT. People need to start taking the Directions seriously and we are increasingly disappointed that it has come down to hard enforcement.

"The majority of the community continues to do the right thing. It is time for that small percentage of the community who are not adhering to the lockdown requirements to stay home unless you have a legitimate reason to leave."

Each of the individuals was issued a $5024 infringement for contravening an emergency declaration.

Katherine and Robinson River remain in lockdown until 6pm on Monday and there is a mask mandate in place across the Northern Territory.

Residents are only permitted to leave home during the lockdown period for the following five reasons:

  1. Medical treatment, including COVID testing or vaccination
  2. For essential goods and services, like groceries and medications
  3. For work that is considered essential and can't be done at home
  4. For one hour of outdoor exercise a day within 5 km from your home with one other person or people from your house
  5. To provide care and support to a family member or person who cannot support themselves or in case of an emergency, including escaping domestic or family violence.
