Gwydir Shire Council has received the formal resignation of Cr Marilyn Dixon OAM, effective Tuesday 3 February 2026.
Cr Dixon has resigned due to medical reasons, and the resignation has been formally notified to the NSW Electoral Commission. The vacancy will be filled by a countback election from the 2024 ordinary election. Only unelected candidates from that election are eligible to participate, with no new nominations permitted. The outcome will reflect voter preferences expressed at the last ordinary election, with results to be published on 17 March 2026.
Mash's resignation marks the end of an era for the Gwydir community.
Her lifelong dedication to service was shaped by a defining moment in 1958, when her family home in Bingara was destroyed by fire. The community came together to rebuild it - an act of kindness that inspired her enduring commitment to giving back.
First elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2016, 2021 and 2024, Cr Dixon served the Shire with pride, compassion and common sense. She sat on numerous committees, attended countless events and always put community first.
Her contribution extended far beyond Council. Named Citizen of the Year in 1998 and nominated for the Hidden Treasures Honour Roll in 2011, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2017. A life member of Bingara Pony Club and Bingara Rugby League, Patron of Bingara Central School and dedicated member of the Bingara Special Events Committee, Mash is at the heart of community life - often behind the scenes, and often in the kitchen.
Mayor Cr Tiffany Galvin said Cr Dixon's contribution to the Shire will not be forgotten.
"Mash has given her heart and soul to this community for decades. She has been a tireless advocate and a proud representative of our Shire. On behalf of Council and the entire Gwydir community, we sincerely thank Mash for everything she has given. Her legacy will live on in the heart of Gwydir forever."
Gwydir Shire Council acknowledges Cr Dixon's extraordinary contribution and extends its deepest gratitude and best wishes to her and her family.
