Last Council Meeting saw the endorsement of the Draft Climate Action Plan for the Central Goldfields Shire. I was one of many that had the pleasure of working with a group of passionate and enthusiastic people who wish to help the Shire progress toward a cleaner future.

The draft outlines six areas for adaptation and mitigation. These are [in no particular order] 1) education, raising awareness and mobilisation. 2) Built environment and transport. 3) Health and wellbeing. 4) Waste and circular economy. 5) Renewable energy. 6) Land and water.

Each of these areas has goals that we wish to work toward to help ensure a sustainable environment and community for future generations. As we see an ever-increasing global shift to more sustainable living and practices, we want our Shire to be on the front foot for any opportunities that may arise from this shift such as investment in green technologies. We also want to ensure our resilience toward any negative impacts of climate change such as severe weather events or water insecurity.

Arguably, we can't do this alone but with this commitment, we are one step closer. Working with all available partners, we can take advantage of knowledge and initiatives that are beneficial to us and our environment. The plan is just the first step in our journey. I for one am looking forward to the future developments and projects to come out of this.

There is a Community Information Session tonight (12/04) at 6.30pm in the atrium of the Maryborough Resource Centre with our Sustainability Officer Julia Walsh.
