Critical incident declared after man dies at Gunnedah

A critical incident has been declared after a man died in hospital after police were called to a home in Gunnedah overnight.

Two officers from the Oxley Police District were called to a home on Herbert Street about 8pm (Thursday 20 May 2021), due to concerns about the behaviour of a 27-year-old man.

Police will allege the man became aggressive when officers attempted to speak with him.

OC spray and a Taser were deployed during a struggle with the man before he lost consciousness.

First aid was rendered to the man at the scene before he was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Gunnedah Hospital where he died a short time later.

A female officer has also been taken to hospital where she is being treated for a bite wound to her right forearm and an injured left knee.

A critical incident team from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will also be subject to independent review.
