The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Heath MacDonald, and the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Minister Responsible for the Centre-du-Québec Region, Donald Martel, announce that they are pursuing their commitment to improving the Crop Insurance Program (ASREC). Starting in 2026, all grain producers in Quebec will benefit from the expanded disaster clause. This measure aims to better support producers when they face climate-related hazards and strengthen the financial stability of agricultural businesses.
Under this measure, federal and provincial governments will now cover 100% of the portion of the premium calculated for losses caused by natural disasters for grain, grain corn and oilseed crops. Together, both governments will contribute nearly $2.5 million a year to support this measure.
As a result, premiums paid by farms insured by the ASREC Program for these crops will decrease by an average of 15%, which will ease pressure on the cashflow of businesses coping with the financial effects of a poor harvest.
To reduce the administrative burden on businesses, no action is required. All businesses that are already covered will automatically benefit from the new, more favourable rate.
