Daly River, Palumpa Evacuations in Progress

NT Government

Residents from the Daly River and Palumpa communities are being evacuated to Darwin today due to flooding in the region.

Emergency flood warnings remain current for the Daly River, which is expected to reach major flood level on Saturday afternoon.

The Daly River at Daly River Police Station is currently 13.31 metres and rising.

The community of Palumpa is also experiencing localised flooding and is currently isolated due to rapidly rising water levels, with road access not possible.

"To ensure community safety, we have issued an evacuation order for Daly River and Palumpa, with residents being relocated to Darwin today," Incident Controller, Commander Shaun Gill said.

"Our number one priority is the preservation of life. By moving people early we are reducing the risk to the community and to our emergency personnel."

Approximately 400 people from Daly River will be accommodated at the Foskey Pavilion at the Darwin Showgrounds until it is safe for them to return home.

Approximately 200 people from Palumpa will be accommodated at Marrara Indoor Stadium.

The length of stay will depend on weather conditions, flooding impacts and advice from emergency authorities.

The Welfare Functional Group will continue to adjust staffing and support arrangements based on operational advice and conditions on the ground.

The Territory Emergency Operations Centre has been activated and planning for evacuation and welfare support is well underway.
