Darling Downs Police Log 139 Offences in Op Xray Launch

Police have charged more than 120 people with 139 offences as part of a weekend operation targeting road related offences in the Darling Downs District.

The operation involved high visibility patrols conducted on the Toowoomba Range and in Gatton on 19 September.

Officers from the Toowoomba Highway Patrol with assistance from Toowoomba and Gatton stations conducted roadside breath tests.

A 52-year-old Glenvale man was charged with low range drink driving after allegedly recording a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.053% while travelling on the Toowoomba Connection Road at Redwood.

He is due to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on 16 October.

Officers also conducted 23 roadside drug tests resulting in five motorists returning a positive result.

120 motorists received speeding fines including a 43-year-old Westbrook man who was allegedly observed travelling at 93 km/h in a 70 km/h zone, resulting in a $725 fine, and loss of four demerit points.

The weekend's activities formed part of statewide Operation Xray Spring Break which runs until 10 October.

As of 21 September, there has been 24 lives lost in the Darling Downs District, three higher than the same period last year.

Darling Downs District Officer Superintendent Doug McDonald said motorists can expect to see police anywhere at any time.

"Police will be on our roads throughout the school holiday period conducting enforcement activities focusing on the Fatal Five: speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear seatbelts, fatigue and distraction," said Supt McDonald.

"Our commitment is to save lives which is why it is essential that we continue to target and enforce dangerous driving behaviour."

The Queensland Police Service is committed to reducing the number of lives lost on our roads.

Data shows that serious crashes can be significantly reduced when drivers recognise and avoid the 'Fatal Five' behaviours: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.
