In preparation for Territory Day celebrations, City of Darwin, in partnership with RSPCA Northern Territory, is inviting local pet owners to take part in a free microchipping event to help keep pets safe and support their swift return home if they do go missing during the festivities.
The community is invited to come along to RSPCA Northern Territory (Boulter Road, Berrimah) this Saturday, 21 June between 10am and 2pm to take part in this initiative that is aimed at reducing the number of lost pets during a period when fireworks often frighten animals, causing them to run away or escape their homes.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said this proactive initiative is a simple and effective way to give pet owners peace of mind and help reunite lost animals with their families quickly.
"Territory Day is a special time for celebration in the Northern Territory, but it can also be stressful for pets. Fireworks can lead to frightened animals fleeing their homes, and unfortunately, not all of them find their way back," Mr Vatskalis said.
"By microchipping your pet, you're giving them the best chance of being safely returned should they go missing. We're proud to partner with RSPCA Northern Territory to provide this free service to our community." He added.
No bookings are required, pet owners can simply arrive with their dog or cat on the day. All pets must be safely secured on leads or in carriers.
City of Darwin encourages all pet owners to take advantage of this opportunity and ensure that their pets are properly identified before Territory Day on 1 July.
