City of Darwin is calling on residents to prepare their properties ahead of the upcoming cyclone season, with the 2025 Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up (PCCU) campaign now underway.
Held annually, the PCCU is a free community service that helps residents safely dispose of eligible household waste that could become hazardous during a storm, while also reducing environmental impact through recycling and reuse.
This year, residents are encouraged to sort items by material type and ensure they comply with collection guidelines to support the safe and efficient removal of waste.
City of Darwin CEO Simone Sanders said PCCU is about more than clean-ups, it's about community preparedness and protecting the environment.
"Our annual Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up plays a vital role in keeping Darwin safe and storm-ready while promoting sustainable practices," Ms Sanders said.
"We're asking residents to think before they throw and ask, can it be repaired, reused, or recycled? This small step helps reduce landfill and supports our commitment to a clean, green city."
To keep collections organised, the 2025 PCCU will be divided into two zones and will be rolled out over a two-month period. Residents must place their eligible items on the verge during their zone's clean-up weekend to ensure collection. Zone 1 suburbs need to have their eligible items on the verges on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August, and Zone 2 suburbs on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September.
To assist residents in need, City of Darwin also offers an assisted pick-up service for seniors and people with mobility limitations. Bookings must be made by 15 August for Zone 1 and by 12 September for Zone 2 by calling 8930 0300.
Residents are reminded:
- Items must be under 2 metres in length
- Total volume must not exceed 2 cubic metres per household
Items must be grouped by material to enable recycling
Accepted items include:
- Broken furniture
- Whitegoods (with doors and glass removed)
- E-waste (TVs, printers, etc.)
- BBQs, bikes, and metal goods
- Pool equipment (no chemicals)
- Garden tools and small appliances
Prohibited items include:
- Garden waste, paint, gas bottles, asbestos
- Tyres, car parts, batteries, glass and mirrors
- Food waste, cardboard, and oversized items
- Commercial and business waste
Residents will be asked to remove any prohibited items from their verge when collection teams attend. Our teams won't return once they've been through for collection and anything remaining on your verge will be considered illegal dumping and the responsibility of the resident to remove.
City of Darwin is committed to creating a safer, cleaner, and more sustainable city.
