The Darwin Waterfront will come alive this Christmas with a month-long celebration of lights, entertainment and family fun, which is part of the Finocchiaro CLP Government's commitment to restoring the Territory lifestyle and supporting local businesses.
From 29 November, the precinct will transform into a festive wonderland, featuring a free one-kilometre Christmas Light Trail with more than 20 dazzling installations.
Highlights include a six-metre surfing Santa, a giant octopus, a "surfable" wave and Territory-themed decorations the whole family can enjoy.
This year, eleven new large-scale decorations will join the collection - from a glowing lighthouse to a giant octopus - blending traditional Christmas magic with the Waterfront's tropical character.
The new Waterfront Express will also launch this year - a cheerful Christmas train offering free nightly rides from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm so kids and families can explore the precinct in style.
The train winds through the light trail, giving children a front-row view of the festive displays and finishing near the lagoon lawns for entertainment and food.
Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Marie-Clare Boothby said the program celebrates community spirit and the Territory way of life.
"The Darwin Waterfront is where families come together to relax, celebrate and enjoy what makes our lifestyle so special," said Ms Boothby.
"This Christmas is about bringing people into the city, supporting local businesses and creating a space where everyone can share in the festive cheer."
Visitors can look forward to pop-up performers, live music, face-painting, and Santa appearances every Friday to Sunday night, as well as festive markets and activities throughout December.
A new online ordering platform lets guests order meals from multiple Waterfront venues, making it even easier to dine, unwind and enjoy the season.
For the grown-ups, there's even a self-guided 'Sip & Sleigh' cocktail trail, featuring limited-edition Christmas drinks and festive bites from local venues, another way for people to enjoy the season while supporting local hospitality.
Darwin Waterfront Chair Patrick Bellot said the festivities showcase the community's creativity and talent.
"Our program features performances from the Darwin City Brass Band, Baby Ballet, local choirs and dance groups, it's a real celebration of the Top End's spirit," said Mr Bellot.
"We can't wait to welcome everyone to celebrate the magic of Christmas at the Waterfront."
Wharf One Food and Wine owner Pina Sommerville said the events bring a welcome boost for local traders.
"The lights and entertainment bring people back week after week - families, couples, everyone. It creates such a buzz and keeps our restaurants busy right through December," said Ms Sommerville.
