Darwin's Beam Restored, City Connectivity Ensured

Darwin City Council
  • Beam scooters and bikes are back online after Cyclone Fina, in selected areas between Darwin Waterfront and Cullen Bay.

  • This comes as the news that Beam's e-scooter and e-bike services in Darwin will continue for another two years until December 2027.

Today, Beam scooters and bike services return between Darwin Waterfront and Cullen Bay extending out to Fannie Bay and Parap, with staged access expected across Darwin throughout December and January.

As part of the City of Darwin and Beam Emergency Management Plans, Beam scooters were removed prior to Cyclone Fina.

Connectivity across the municipality is here to stay as Beam e-scooters and e-bikes are extended for another two years, through to 30 November 2027.

Since December 2023, Beam services have come popular with nearly 950,000 trips taken and more than one million kilometres travelled. The average trip is 1.2 kilometres, taking around 8 minutes. Notably, 57% of Beam trips replace a car journey, helping to reduce congestion and emissions across the city.

City of Darwin General Manager Innovation Alice Percy said Beam's innovative approach, strong track record, and commitment to safety were key factors in their success during the competitive tender process.

"It's great to see the uptake of Beam scooters and bikes over the past two years, and it tells us that residents and visitors enjoy the easy and sustainable way to get around Darwin," she said.

"They help riders in their daily commute, and to explore and bring areas of the city to life while supporting City of Darwin's vision of a cool, clean, and green city by reducing emissions while supporting the Movement Strategy."

The Movement Strategy aims to make getting around the city easier by improving infrastructure and connectivity, while reducing transport's impact on the environment.

"With the new Smith Street bike lanes and planned future improvements, Beam riders will also benefit from safer journeys across the city," Dr Percy said.

Beam Mobility Chief of Staff, Ross Vinten said, "We're delighted to be renewing our partnership with the City of Darwin and thank the council for their continued trust and support."

"Over the past two years we've worked closely together to deliver a safe, reliable and sustainable micromobility service for residents and visitors, and we look forward to building on that success."

The Darwin fleet will soon see an addition the Apollo Lite e-bikes designed for inclusivity, with a lighter frame, smaller handlebars, wider tyres, adjustable seat height, and automatic uphill assist, making it easier to ride for those who may find larger e-bikes challenging.
