Defend Your Data campaign launched

Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for Science and Technology

Tasmanians can learn how to better protect their data online, how to spot a scam and what to do if they are a victim of a scam thanks to a new Government advertising campaign.

Minister for Science and Technology, Madeleine Ogilvie, said the Tasmanian Government has begun a TV, newspaper, radio, and social media advertising campaign for the wider community about online safety.

The three core aspects to the campaign are:

  1. Screen for scams: be alert to things that don't seem right;
  2. Shield yourself: with secure passwords and updated apps and devices; and
  3. Be ready to react: in the event something goes wrong.

"Being cyber safe is everyone's business, and we want all Tasmanians to be armed with the knowledge and tools to better protect themselves and their data online," Minister Oglivie said.

"We know cyber security is an issue that is concerning not just in Tasmania, but across the nation and the world. We must all do our best to defend against this ever present risk.

"That is why as a Government we have invested record funding. In the 2020-21 Budget, we increased funding for cyber security to $4.9 million over four years.

"Protecting Tasmanians data continues to be a priority, which is why investment in cyber security has never been higher than under the Tasmanian Liberal Government."
