The Tasmania Jewels officially launched their inaugural season today, marking a significant milestone for basketball in Tasmania.
Entry of the Jewels into the Women's National Basketball League is the first time the State will be representing in the competition in 30 years.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the Tasmania Jewels would help inspire the next generation of Tasmanian basketballers.
"Today's launch of the Tasmania Jewels is a significant moment in our State's history," Minister Archer said.
"The return of a Tasmanian team to the WNBL is an important milestone and demonstrates the strength and growing popularity of basketball in our State.
"The Jewel's will inspire young Tasmanians and create a pathway for our talented athletes to pursue their basketball ambitions at the highest level without having to leave home.
"We can't wait to see the Jewels take to the court for the first time and give Tasmanians the opportunity to get behind their new team."
The Jewels will play their inaugural WNBL game against Geelong Venom at MyState Bank Arena on 15 October 2026.
The team will host 11 home games across Tasmania during the season, including six in Hobart and five in Launceston.
