PT Mayawana Persada - has cleared more than 33,000 hectares, an area nearly half the size of Singapore. As this report sets out, the large-scale forest clearing carried out by Mayawana is causing social conflict between the company and an indigenous Dayak community and is depleting forest habitat for protected species such as Bornean orangutans, helmeted hornbills, Muller's gibbons, and sun bears. Over 55,000 hectares of rainforest remains in the Mayawana concession, making it a critical test case for efforts to control deforestation in Indonesia.
