Dementia Action Week: Breaking Stigma, Building Support

Dementia Action Week, 15 - 21 September, is a powerful reminder of the importance of understanding, compassion and community support for those living with dementia and their carers. Dementia is not a normal part of ageing, it's a progressive condition that affects brain function, impacting memory, thinking, and behaviour. With over 400,000 Australians living with dementia, it's more important than ever to raise awareness and challenge misconceptions.

Dementia: myths vs facts

Misinformation can lead to stigma and isolation. Let's clear up some common misconceptions with key facts from Dementia Australia:

  • Dementia is not a normal part of ageing.
  • Alzheimer's disease is one type of dementia; there are over 100 types.
  • People under 65 can be diagnosed with younger onset dementia.
  • Dementia affects more than just memory, it impacts thinking, mood, and behaviour.
  • There is no scientific evidence that coconut oil, aluminium, or cold showers prevent or cure dementia.
