Deputy Prime Minister to visit US

Department of Defence

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon Richard Marles MP, will visit the United States of America from 11-14 July 2022.

In his first visit to the US since assuming office, the Deputy Prime Minister will meet his Defence counterpart, Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III, as well as members of the United States Government, Congress, the defence and national security community, and industry partners. He will be focused on deepening cooperation within the Alliance, working to maintain progress under AUKUS, and furthering our shared vision of a resilient and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

The Deputy Prime Minister said Australia had no more important defence partner than the United States.

"For over 70 years, ANZUS has been a powerful demonstration that neither the US or Australia stand alone. In the evolving strategic environment, the strength of this enduring partnership is more important than ever," Deputy Prime Minister said.

"I am ambitious about what Australia and the United States can achieve together, and look forward to bringing new energy to the table. It is critical that we work together with our allies and partners to protect the rules-based international order."

"I look forward to addressing the AALD, which marks its 30-year anniversary. It is a privilege to be leading the Australian delegation to what has become a premier event, and important joint initiative."

During the visit, the Deputy Prime Minister will also deliver a keynote speech to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
