DES investigating sick birds in Mackay marina

The Department of Environment and Science (DES) is investigating after a large number of unwell and deceased seabirds were found in the Mackay marina on Tuesday (31 August 2021).

It's believed 600 common noddys took shelter on a fishing vessel as it passed Penrith Island during bad weather. Once the vessel entered the marina, the birds congregated on the rock wall near the public boat ramp.

DES officers have taken water samples for laboratory testing and a number of live and deceased birds have been taken to a local vet for assessment.

Wildlife officers inspected the marina yesterday and found approximately 50 common noddys of varying health remaining in the area. Further inspections of the marina and surrounding coastline will be carried out today.

Members of the public are encouraged to report further sick birds to the department's pollution hotline on 1300 130 372.
