The AFP has charged a detainee at the Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre in Western Australia for allegedly assaulting multiple security officers and property damage.
The man, 28, from the United Kingdom, allegedly assaulted three male officers in separate incidents on 4 December, 2025, and 13 December, 2025.
On 4 December, 2025, the man allegedly pushed an officer in the chest, before he ripped pipes off the wall in a gym area and damaged a water fountain.
On 13 December, 2025, the man allegedly pressed a lit cigarette onto the neck of a security officer. Later that day, the man allegedly punched another security officer in the face before being restrained. The injured security officer underwent surgery for a fractured jaw at Royal Perth Hospital.
The AFP attended the facility yesterday (15 December, 2025) and charged the man with:
- Three counts of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, contrary to section 147.1 of the Criminal Code (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is 13 years' imprisonment;
- One count of damaging Commonwealth property, contrary to section 132.8A of the Criminal Code (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is 10 years' imprisonment; and
- One count of obstruction of a Commonwealth public official, contrary to section 149.1 of the Criminal Code (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is two years' imprisonment.
He faced Perth Magistrates Court yesterday (16 December, 2025) and was remanded in custody to next appear in the same court on 19 December, 2025.
