Detectives Investigate St Kilda Assault

Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after three youths were assaulted in St Kilda yesterday.

It is understood two groups of men, who were known to each other, had a verbal altercation inside Luna Park about 4.30pm before the offending group was removed by security shortly later.

The offending group later approached the victims on Cavell Street about 6.35pm where a second verbal altercation took place.

The altercation escalated when one of the offenders armed himself with a machete and struck two of the victims.

Two 18-year-old men from Lalor and Mickleham man sustained minor cuts.

A 17-year-old boy sustained a graze to the forearm during the altercation.

The trio were treated by paramedics at the scene.

The group of offenders fled the scene in a grey-coloured Land Rover.

The vehicle was involved in a minor collision with another car at the intersection of The Esplanade and Cavell Street before it fled towards Melbourne.

No arrests have been made at this stage and the car remains outstanding.

The carriage of knives and machetes continues to be a priority for Victoria Police, with almost 13,000 edged weapons seized so far this year.

This equates to an average of 47 every day.

There is no place for illegal blades, machetes and zombie knives on our streets.

Detective Acting Inspector Nick Densley said it's abhorrent that anyone would even consider bringing a deadly weapon into an area filled with families and children.

"This attack happened in St Kilda entertainment precinct where families and groups of people were out wanting to enjoy the Spring weather but instead had to witness two people being attacked with a machete."

"These violent attacks in public places traumatise not only the victims but innocent bystanders and needs to stop."

"We will do everything in our power to hold those responsible to account".
