We're excited to announce the Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre will be reopening tomorrow – Friday 4 February.
This follows the completion a major $16.5 million redevelopment and upgrade, which has been the second-largest capital works project ever undertaken in the Shire.
The project has seen the sports complex in Civic Drive Greensborough extended to almost double in size, with four new courts and administration building with toilets, showers and change rooms.
Highlights include:
- Four new courts for basketball, netball, volleyball and badminton, bringing the total number of courts to eight
- New entrance with reception, kiosk and café area.
- Expanded gym
- New and refurbished toilets and change rooms.
The Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre redevelopment has been funded with $6 million from Council, and $10.5 million from the Victorian Government comprising $8 million from Sport and Recreation Victoria and $2.5 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund.
Nillumbik Mayor Cr Frances Eyre said the project was a long time in the making and was pleased it could be delivered on schedule, despite the challenges of COVID-19.
"We can't wait to welcome our community back to what is now a top-class sporting facility for not only the people of Nillumbik, but the region," Cr Eyre said.
"This has been a major investment for Council and is part of our commitment to supporting safe, healthy and active lifestyles through the provision of quality facilities.
"I thank the Victorian Government for its significant financial support of this project."
Blue Lake Ward Councillor Richard Stockman said the DVSFC was built in 1976 and the redevelopment was long overdue.
"This project, together with the recently completed $1.6 million upgrade to the Diamond Valley Library, has really revitalised the Civic Drive precinct," Cr Stockman said.
Liam O'Brien, of Aligned Leisure which manages Nillumbik leisure facilities including DVSFC, said the Aligned team was looking forward to reopening the doors of the centre and welcoming the community back.
"We are looking forward to seeing the return of our members and sporting clubs, as well as welcoming new members to the family. We have some early-bird membership offers that will be available for a limited time," he said.
General Manager of the Diamond Valley Basketball Association Patrick Di Lizio said it was an exciting day for their 5000 members and everyone who had been involved with the association for the past 50 years.
"This stadium is a special place where many have begun their basketball journey. It's a tremendous achievement of all involved to deliver a world class facility that our association can now thrive for many years to come," he said.
"We thank the DVBA members responsible for having a hand in the early stages of the project, Nillumbik council for their ongoing support and the Victorian Government for their financial support in the project."
