Dianella Community Centre takes win

It's official: Tarneit West's newest community centre will be called Dianella Community Centre following an extensive community engagement process.

Geographic Names Victoria gazetted the name earlier this month ahead of the centre's opening, which is expected in coming weeks.

The name pays homage to a flora species that is indigenous to the area and was one of two names residents were able to vote on via The Loop website earlier this year.

These names were selected following an extensive engagement process undertaken by Council involving key Wyndham historians and other stakeholders and had to meet several criteria to be considered appropriate.

Wyndham City Mayor Cr Adele Hegedich said Dianella Community Centre would provide the Tarneit West community with access to maternal and child services, a kindergarten, community gathering spaces and a large outdoor space with an amphitheatre, half basketball court, BBQ area and open lawn.

"It will also offer a wide range of programs and activities to suit our nearby residents, community associations, groups and people of all ages," Cr Hegedich said.

"For the centre to be truly representative of the community, we want to find out what programs you'd like to see us run at Dianella Community Centre."

"I encourage you to contact the team and tell them your ideas."

This $9.5 million project has been jointly funded by Wyndham City ($5 million) and the State Government, which contributed $4 million via the Children's Facilities Capital Program and the Growing Suburbs Fund.
