Residents of all ages are invited to roll up their sleeves and join this year's National Tree Day planting event at Eltham Lower Park on Sunday 26 July.
Together, we'll plant 700 indigenous plants as part of the ongoing revegetation project along Diamond Creek.
The project is strengthening an important habitat corridor, creating habitat for local butterfly species including the nationally endangered Eltham Copper Butterfly, found in nearby Hohnes Hill Reserve, and the locally significant Imperial Hairstreak.
The revegetation will also improve the health of Diamond Creek, providing habitat for vulnerable platypus and a range of native mammals, birds, fish and other wildlife.
No experience is needed, with Council staff and volunteers on hand to provide guidance.
Mayor Cr Naomi Joiner said National Tree Day was a wonderful opportunity for the community to make a lasting contribution to Nillumbik's natural environment.
"National Tree Day brings people together to care for the places that make Nillumbik special," Cr Joiner said.
"Every indigenous plant established helps strengthen local biodiversity, improve habitat for native wildlife and create a healthier environment."
Wingrove Ward Councillor John Dumaresq said everyone is welcome.
"Whether you're an experienced gardener or planting your first tree, it's a family-friendly event where you can connect with your neighbours and our natural environment."
Participants are invited to stay for a free barbecue provided by the Lions Club of Nillumbik after the planting. Wear old clothes, sturdy closed-toe shoes and gardening gloves.
This National Tree Day event supports Council's long-term commitment to protecting and enhancing Nillumbik's natural environment. Through its Urban Tree Canopy Strategy, Tree Management Policy and Biodiversity Strategy, Council is increasing tree canopy, protecting significant trees, restoring indigenous vegetation and improving habitat connectivity across our Shire.
