The NSW Liberals and Nationals support stronger gun laws, but we won't support poor implementation.
The test for any firearms reform should be simple - will it make the people of NSW safer?
We will support measures that meet that test, but we will not wave through regulations for Albo's unpopular gun buyback.
Disallowing these regulations gives Parliament the opportunity to demand a better implementation model - one that is targeted, evidence-based, workable and focused squarely on community safety.
These laws were rushed through with urgency in the days before Christmas, but phase one of the buyback won't commence until November.
The Police Minister's performance at Budget Estimates, where it was clear she didn't understand her own legislation and couldn't answer basic questions, only added to our concerns about the implementation of these reforms.
Every dollar and every hour of police effort must be directed where it delivers the greatest safety benefit - particularly getting illegal firearms out of the hands of organised criminals.
This is too important to get wrong.
