Broken Hill City Art Gallery will celebrate the life, work and legacy of Pro Hart with the opening of Pro Hart - Beyond the Canvas: A Retrospective Exhibition 20 Years On on Friday 6 November 2026.
Marking 20 years since his passing, the exhibition explores the breadth of Pro's creative practice and his enduring connection to the city he called home.
Pro Hart remains Broken Hill's most recognised artist. His distinctive works captured the people, landscapes and spirit of the Australian outback, sharing his imagination and unique view of the world with audiences across Australia and beyond.
The exhibition brings together Pro Hart's works from Broken Hill City Art Gallery's permanent collection alongside artworks, personal belongings and memorabilia generously loaned by the Hart family and members of the community. These are complemented by photographs and stories that offer a more personal insight into his life, creative process and connection to Broken Hill. Together, they reveal the breadth of Pro's artistic practice and the relationships he built throughout his life, sharing memories of him as an artist and innovator, as well as a neighbour, employer, mentor and friend.
Gallery and Museum Manager Kathy Graham said the family and community contributions would make the exhibition a particularly personal tribute.
"Many people in Broken Hill have a story about Pro, or an artwork or object that holds a special memory," Ms Graham said.
"We're grateful to the Hart family and everyone who has generously shared their works, treasured belongings and memories. Bringing these together with Pro's works from the Gallery's permanent collection allows us to share more of his story, both as an artist and as someone who meant a great deal to this community."
The opening evening will also include the announcement of the 2026 Pro Hart Outback Art Prize People's Choice Award, revealing the public's favourite work from this year's prize exhibition.
The community is invited to attend the opening of Pro Hart - Beyond the Canvas: A Retrospective Exhibition 20 Years On on Friday 6 November, with light refreshments and bar facilities available. The exhibition will continue until 7 February 2027.
