Two talented young Leeton athletes have received support through Leeton Shire Council's Youth Development Grant program as they prepare to represent their region at major athletics competitions.

Ava Dowton has been awarded a grant to assist with expenses associated with competing at the NSWPSSA Athletics State Championships in Sydney, where she qualified to compete in the 100-metre sprint after progressing through school, district, and regional competition levels.

Fellow athlete Lucy Gilmour has received support to attend the 2026 Australian All Schools Athletics Championship in Perth from 4-6 December, having earned selection through her performance at the NSWCHS Athletics Championships earlier this year.

Mayor George Weston said the Youth Development Grant program helps young people pursue opportunities that may otherwise be financially challenging for families.

"We are incredibly proud of Ava and Lucy and the dedication they have shown to reach this level of competition.

"Representing your community at state and national events is a remarkable achievement and these grants are designed to help remove some of the financial barriers that can come with travel, accommodation and event costs.

"Council is committed to supporting young people to achieve their goals, develop their talents and make the most of opportunities that help them grow and succeed."

The Youth Development Grant program provides assistance to young people who have been selected to participate in sporting, academic, cultural, leadership and community-based activities at a regional, state, national or international level.

Mayor Weston encouraged local young people and their families to explore the program when opportunities arise.

"We know there are many talented young people in our community doing incredible things. The Youth Development Grant program is one way Council can help support them as they pursue those opportunities and represent Leeton on larger stages."
