Ditch your chemicals with Detox Your Home 10 February

Local residents are being urged to 'Detox Your Home' - a free and easy-to-use service to dispose of household chemicals without harming your health or the environment.

The household chemical collection service is coming to Swan Hill on Saturday, 5 March from 9am to 12pm.

Swan Hill Rural City Council, in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, is encouraging residents to use this opportunity to get rid of unwanted, and potentially dangerous, items like pesticides, detergents and weed killers.

Council's Director Infrastructure Svetla Petkova said household chemicals could be dangerous and the program was a safe way to dispose of them.

"Household chemicals can harm your family and your pets, add extra fuel to a house fire, release toxic fumes and pollute the environment for future generations.

"I encourage residents to take advantage of the free Detox Your Home service to safely dispose of unwanted items," she said.

Ms Petkova warned residents against putting chemicals out with the regular rubbish collection where they could explode, ignite or mix with other chemicals. She also cautioned against pouring them down the drain, where they could pollute waterways, harming animals and vegetation, and contaminating drinking water.

The Detox Your Home collection will be held on Saturday, 5 March at the Swan Hill Landfill Transfer Station, 6859 Sea Lake-Swan Hill Road Swan Hill.

Detox Your Home is administered by Sustainability Victoria in partnership with local governments and is funded by the Victorian landfill levy. The products collected are recycled for recovery and diverted from landfill.
