The supermarket giant acknowledges a decline in availability
Woolworths Group responded to the joint call for more plant-based foods by acknowledging the concerns raised about a decline in products and welcoming further dialogue on the issue. In its reply, the company noted the importance of providing customers with a range of choice and indicated that it is considering the feedback as part of its ongoing approach to product selection and category management.
Doctors For Nutrition, alongside Vegan Australia and the Vegan Society of New Zealand, has welcomed Woolworths' response to the joint letter urging the supermarket chain to maintain or increase its range of plant-based products across its stores.
Why are plant-based products so important?
Availability of plant-based alternatives is important for both population health and the environment. Diets that include more plant-based foods are associated with better health outcomes and lower environmental impacts, making access to these products in supermarkets an important issue for consumers and communities alike.
Doctors For Nutrition also notes that the upcoming review of the Australian Dietary Guidelines is expected to further elevate the importance of sustainable dietary patterns and plant-based foods in public health guidance. Global dietary guidelines are seeing a shift to more plant-predominant eating patterns. The revision process already recognises sustainability as an important evidence area, with the opportunity to more fully integrate messages about low-environment-impact diets into national guidance.
Public response has shown significant support
Recent public responses to the issue indicate strong support for greater access to plant-based products, and as one of Australia's and New Zealand's largest supermarket chains, Woolworths is well placed to influence what healthier, more sustainable food choices look like in practice.
"Woolworths has a clear opportunity to demonstrate leadership," said Doctors For Nutrition's CEO, Rebecca Stonor. "By maintaining or increasing its range of plant-based products, it can help normalise healthier choices and align with evolving dietary guidance and consumer expectations".
An opportunity for collaboration
Doctors For Nutrition, Vegan Australia and the Vegan Society of Aotearoa New Zealand remain committed to constructive engagement with Woolworths on this issue. The organisations offer their support to help Woolworths anticipate this shift and position itself as a leader in supporting healthier and more sustainable food choices for the future.
