Don't spend New Year's Eve in ambulance

Ambulance Victoria (AV) is reminding all Victorians to celebrate New Year's Eve safely and responsibly, so they don't spend of the last day of the year in an ambulance.

AV Acting Director of Emergency Management Brett Drummond said he wants all Victorians to celebrate sensibly, look after their health and the safety of those around them.

"If you plan on drinking alcohol, drink in moderation and be sure to have plenty of water between drinks," Mr Drummond said.

"Every year we see people get themselves into trouble from drinking too much or from using drugs. We don't want you, or anyone you love, to start the new year in the back of an ambulance."

"While our paramedics across the state are ready to provide emergency care, personal responsibility is the best prevention this New Year's Eve."

Mr Drummond reminded the community to avoid illegal fireworks while celebrating New Year's Eve.

"We've been called to many cases of people being badly hurt by being too close to illegal fireworks in previous years," he said.

"Steer clear of illegal fireworks - it's just not worth the risk."

New Year's Eve is one of the busiest days of the year, and Mr Drummond said it's important to save Triple Zero (000) only for emergencies.

"We will always be there for you in an emergency but for minor issues, consider whether a GP or other options might be more appropriate," he said.

There are lots of places to get health advice which aren't Triple Zero (000). If it is non-life-threatening, there are other options including:

  • The Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) is a free service that can treat non-life-threatening emergencies virtually, with no need to attend an emergency department.
  • NURSE-ON-CALL (1300 60 60 24) is a free service that puts you in contact with a registered nurse for caring, professional health advice around the clock.
  • Priority Primary Care Centres provide GP-led care to people who need urgent care, but not an emergency response. Your pharmacist can also provide great advice on medications.

Ambulance Victoria wishes for every Victorian to stay safe this New Year's Eve and reminds the community to treat our paramedics with the respect they deserve.
