Greater Shepparton City Council has noted both the Dookie Community Action Plan and the Shepparton East Community Action Plan at its Council Meeting on Tuesday.
Council partners with small towns and neighbourhoods to empower local communities to identify priorities, influence decision‑making and take an active role in shaping the future of their area. Part of this support includes the development of Community Plans.
The Dookie and District Development Forum (DDDF) undertook extensive community consultation to develop the Dookie Community Action Plan, which is structured around five key pillars; social, economic, built, environment and advocacy. The Plan outlines actions the DDDF will take in partnership with the community, Council, local businesses and other government agencies.
Key achievements delivered by the DDDF to date include the development of stages one and two of the rail trail, local tree planting initiatives, and the installation of outdoor exercise equipment and shade sails.
Council also noted the Shepparton East Community Action Plan, developed by the Shepparton East Community Planning Group (CPG). Community consultation undertaken in 2024 captured ideas and feedback from residents, with a draft plan later released for further community input.
The Shepparton East Community Action Plan identifies priority focus areas and outlines clear, practical actions the CPG will take to achieve them. Priorities classified as high in the Plan include enhancing child road and pedestrian safety, improving footpaths/shared paths and strengthening community engagement through events.
Since 2024, the Shepparton East CPG has coordinated a range of initiatives to strengthen community connection, including a community movie night last year, a Neighbour Day Community BBQ and the installation of a new community noticeboard.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said Community Action Plans play an important role in empowering communities to shape their future.
"Community Action Plans provide a strong foundation for Council to work collaboratively with our communities, ensuring local priorities are understood and considered as part of broader planning and decision‑making," he said.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Geoff Akers, Pine Lodge Ward representative, said both Dookie and Shepparton East have demonstrated strong community leadership.
"These plans reflect the passion, ideas and commitment of residents who care deeply about their communities. I am really pleased to see people coming together to identify what matters most to them and take practical steps to turn ideas into reality," he said.
