Drink and drug drivers caught in act, South Australia

In the 24 hours from 7am Saturday 5 March to 7am Sunday 6 March, Police detected 68 drivers for either alcohol or drug related offences.

During this phase of Operation Strop Drink Drug Drive, 4945 alcotests and 308 drug tests were conducted across the state, with the following detections:

  • 39 drivers were detected with a blood alcohol reading above .05 (0.8% hit rate) (one driver failed to comply).
  • The highest alcohol reading was recorded by a 36 year old male from Cummins, who had a BA reading of 0.288 grams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
  • 28 drivers were detected with drugs in their system (cannabis and/or amphetamine (9.09% hit rate)
  • 17 vehicles were impounded
  • 18 drivers were issued with an immediate lost of license

Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge Traffic Services Branch said these drivers made selfish and irresponsible decisions.

"Police will not tolerate dangerous driving behaviours that put the lives of all road users at risk," Supt Gray said.

"Drink and drug driving laws are in place to save lives. There is no excuse for choosing to break those laws and endanger lives."
