Travel choice is built into our US Express Lanes, tolled motorway that lanes give Greater Washington Area residents the choice of faster, more reliable trips along I-95, I-395, and I-495 in Virginia. These dynamically tolled roadways are priced to meet demand while maintaining traffic speeds of above around 70 km/h (45 m/h).
Motorists can even choose to carpool and save on tolls, as vehicles with three or more passengers, including buses, travel for free on our Express Lanes.
And we also support wider public transport (or what we call 'transit' in the US) choices. Since 2019, a portion of our 395 Express Lanes revenue has been invested in multi-modal transit solutions throughout the I-95 and I-395 corridor.
We have just made our fifth annual contribution, this year of USD16.5 million, to the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission's Commuter Choice Program. Our total investments are now just shy of USD80 million - and have helped funds new infrastructure and improvements across bus lines, park and ride lots and commuter rail services. Our contributions equate to us supporting around 2.6 million transit passenger trips across the Greater Washington Area since 2019.
