Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding the community to think about their driving habits ahead of National Road Safety Week.
Held in May each year, National Road Safety Week highlights key road safety issues such as speeding, mobile phone use while driving, and drink driving.
Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said the Central Queensland road statistics so far are a wake-up call for all of us, with 18 lives lost, which is four more than this time last year.
"For each of those lives lost, the ripple effect and impact on our community is significant," Cr Taylor said.
"Living in a rural and regional area means a large majority of us drive daily without having the same public transport networks as metropolitan areas.
"We are also driving longer distances which means more time on the road for many of us, often without proper breaks."
So far this year, 125 lives have been lost on the roads across Queensland, 27 more than this time last year.
Across Australia 1300 lives were lost on the road in 2025.
"Every life lost on our roads is one too many, and National Road Safety Week is not only a time to think about our choices on the road, but also to remember the lives lost and to make the pledge to drive so others survive," Cr Taylor said.
