To support Hobsons Bay residents to recycle their food and garden waste Council is trialling a drop-off option for food and garden waste this summer.

A free drive-through drop-off for food and garden organics will be trialled at Council's Operations Centre on Saturday 11 and 18 December and 8 and 15 January, between 10am and 12pm at the Operations Centre in Sugar Gum Drive, Altona.

Following the change to collection frequency of green waste bins from weekly to fortnightly, the drop-off events for food and garden organics will assist those households that have larger amounts of organic materials than can't fit in their green bin.

All Hobsons Bay residents can access the service and more dates may be added depending on demand.

Garden organics, under 1.5m long, bundled and/or contained will be accepted, as well as food scraps, which can be carried in a caddy or bucket or wrapped in a couple of sheets of newspaper or paper towel to transport. The drop-off station is unable to accept mixed recycling, general rubbish, hard waste or electronic waste.

Residents will need to show their driver's licence as proof of residency and check-in via the Services Victoria app.

"Council's aim with its waste and recycling service is to divert as much waste as possible from landfill through innovative ways that are cost effective and accessible," said Cr Hemphill.

Organic materials recovered through the drive-through drop-off service are processed to become compost and mulch and will support Council's aim to divert waste from landfill.

Council is also working on other options to support households to recycle food and garden organics, including supplying free paper bags for food scraps to all households who register for the trial, which starts February 2022.
