Next week, Rockhampton Regional Council will be temporarily removing the fairy lights from the trees along East Street.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the removal of the lights is imperative to the health and future growth of these trees.

"The fairy lights in the CBD are a community favourite, but it's time we bring them down to allow our trees some time to restore and regrow," Cr Rutherford said.

"These beautiful trees have lived in East Street for many years. They bring wonderful shade and greenery to our CBD, so now it's our turn to return the favour and let them reset.

"Council crews will be undertaking the removal of the fairy lights on 13 March and will take approximately five to seven working days to complete, subject to weather conditions.

"Works will be undertaken in the early mornings, from 5.30am to approximately 7.00am, prior to businesses opening and will not require any road closures.

"During these works, 1-2 centre carparks will be closed prior to 5.30am but will be reopened each day after crews have finished for that morning.

"To help speed up their recovery, we will also be undertaking remedial pruning as the crews take down the lights, to improve the overall form and function of the trees which promotes a healthy growth response and encourage longevity of the tree.

"Whilst the trees reset their health, we have increased the smart street lighting intensity to 100% during this period to assist with illumination in the evenings.

"Once the trees have had a chance to restore, new fairy lights will be reinstated in the CBD in late May.

"I want to thank all the businesses and community who use the CBD for your patience while crews undertake these essential works."

"If you have any queries or concerns, please reach out to Council on 07 4932 900.
