With Easter school holidays starting tomorrow, the Rockhampton Region has plenty to keep families entertained and busy for those choosing a staycation these holidays.

From the high octane Rockynats to relaxed Zoo visits, quietly taking in art and culture at RMOA or getting hands on with upcycling workshops at The Tinkerage, Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said there was something for all ages.

"We know parents are always looking for ways to keep the kids busy during the holidays, especially without breaking the bank," Mayor Williams said.

"The good news is you don't need to go far to have a great time. There are heaps of free local activities happening right here in Rockhampton.

"The Zoo is always a hit during the school holidays, and it's a great option for families - there's plenty for kids to see and learn while enjoying some time outdoors.

"These holidays are also a great chance to enjoy our parks and community spaces. Pack a picnic and let the kids run around at Kershaw Gardens, Mount Archer-Nurim or the Riverside Precinct.

"Kids can also get creative at the Rockhampton Museum of Art, or check out a live show. There is something for every age and interest.

"Council is proud to support a diverse and engaging school holiday program, and I encourage families to take a look at what's on and make the most of these great local activities.

Rockhampton Zoo Director Liz Bellward said the zoo would be open all throughout Easter, with an abundance of activities for the wild at heart.

"As well as the incredible animals we have on display we have a number of activities right throughout the holidays," Ms Bellward said.

"Our Easter hunt has kicked off and will run for the first week of the school holidays, finishing on Saturday, 7 April.

"You'll find checklists at the visitor hub at the zoo entry, and during your visit, keep an eye out find the cardboard eggs around or inside the enclosures.

"For a chance to win some prizes, including a Meerkat encounter for up to four people, drop your completed checklists in the collection box on your way out.

"We also have our zoo keeper talks, animal encounters and our junior zookeeper experience will also be running throughout the holidays."

Rockhampton Regional Libraries has a jam-packed program for all ages with craft, science and even karaoke at its Rockhampton, Gracemere and Mount Morgan facilities.

For art enthusiasts, Rockhampton Museum of Art has its new Intimacy exhibition on display and throughout the school holidays, artists young and old can get inspired by the Locust Jones display and contribute to large-scale collaborative drawings.

Those looking to get outdoors and step back in time can head to the Rockhampton Heritage Village and learn about the past with vintage car rides and games, or take in nature at the Botanic and Kershaw Gardens and local parks.
