Campaspe Shire Council is rolling out new technology to improve parking management across Echuca, with the introduction of Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) technology replacing traditional tyre chalking methods to detect parking time limit overstays.
From 8 September, a two-week warning period will begin, during which vehicles that overstay the parking limit in timed, non-metered areas will receive warning notices. Enforcement through infringements will commence from 22 September.
"Parking management plays a crucial role in facilitating the turnover of vehicles, which allows visitors easy access to the services our wonderful local businesses provide," Campaspe Shire Mayor Cr Daniel Mackrell said.
Council vehicles equipped with LPR technology will be operated by Local Laws Officers. The system works by capturing and comparing multiple images of vehicles during patrols to detect overstays.
"This new system will mean more accurate and efficient monitoring of parking breaches, freeing up short-stay parking spaces," Cr Mackrell said.
Council has proactively engaged with local businesses and residents within these timed non-metered areas ahead of the rollout.
While the technology is new, parking time limits remain unchanged. Council is reminding visitors to check signage before parking.
"We understand the value of free parking, and we will maintain this," Cr Mackrell said.
"To increase short-term parking availability for customers, we encourage workers to consider parking a short distance away and walking to their workplace. It's a simple way to make a big difference in supporting our local businesses."
